It is with great enthusiasm that we would like to celebrate and congratulate Prof. Maria Siemionow, a Board of Directors Member of the Polish American Medical Society. Prof. Siemionow was awarded a Doctorate Honoris Causa by the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland.
The Senate of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn honored Prof. Siemionow with the honorary doctorate “for her significant contribution to the development of Polish and global science in the fields of reconstructive surgery, regenerative medicine, and transplantology; outstanding scientific, educational, organizational, and medical activities, as well as exceptional kindness and constant readiness to help others.”
The title was awarded to Prof. Siemionow during the celebration of the University of Warmia and Mazury’s anniversary – June 1st, marking 24 years since the establishment of the university. The Rector, Prof. Jerzy Przyborowski, emphasized that the acceptance of the title by Prof. Siemionow is “a great honor and joy for the university.”
Prof. Dawid Larysz, who served as the promoter for conferring the honorary doctorate to Prof. Siemionow, highlighted that she has permanently etched herself into the history of world science as the scientist who performed the first nearly complete face transplant in the USA in 2008. The patient had been a victim of gunshot wounds.
Prof. Siemionow has over 400 scientific publications and 120 books to her credit. Under her scientific supervision, four collective publications were created, and she is also the author of 8 patents.
Prof. Siemionow completed her medical studies in Poznan. In 1985, she was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences by Poznan University. She was awarded the title of Professor of Medical Sciences in Poznan in 2011 and honed her skills in the USA and Finland. For nearly 20 years, Prof. Siemionow led the Department of Plastic and Microsurgery at the College of Medicine in Cleveland. Currently, she is a professor and the director of Microsurgery Research at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago.
